Avianca Flights
About
Avianca, founded in 1919, is one of the oldest airlines in the world. As the flag carrier of Colombia, Avianca operates primarily from El Dorado International Airport in Bogotá. One of the largest airlines in Latin America, Avianca operates a fleet of 126 aircraft as of 2024, flying to 74 destinations in 26 countries. The airline is known for its extensive global flight network, including routes in the Americas, Europe, and the Caribbean, and for offering regional connectivity within Colombia and beyond.
Avianca is recognized for its customer-focused service approach. Its in-flight entertainment system, available on its modern fleet of Airbus and Boeing aircraft, offers passengers a rich selection of content, from the latest movies to music options. Additionally, frequent flyers can benefit from the "LifeMiles" loyalty program, which allows passengers to earn points and enjoy exclusive rewards. With Economy and Business Class options catering to different budgets, Avianca is a preferred airline for travelers seeking quality service and a wide-reaching flight network.
Check-in
Avianca offers several check-in options to accommodate passenger preferences. Online check-in is available starting 48 hours before departure for most flights, and 24 hours prior for flights to or from the United States, Puerto Rico, and Canada. This service remains open until 60 minutes before international flights and 45 minutes before domestic flights within Colombia and Ecuador. Passengers can complete the process via Avianca's official website or mobile app by entering their booking code and last name. Online check-in is free for all fare types; however, checking in at the airport counter may incur additional charges for Basic, Light, XS, and S fares.
For those who prefer or require in-person assistance, airport check-in counters and self-service kiosks are available. It's recommended to arrive at the airport at least three hours before scheduled international flights and two hours before domestic flights. Passengers needing special assistance, traveling with minors or pets, or those unable to check in online should proceed to the airport counter. Additionally, in certain locations like Havana, local regulations mandate completing the check-in process at the airport, even if online check-in has been done.
Baggage Allowance
Hand Luggage
All passengers are allowed one personal item, such as a purse, backpack, or laptop bag, with maximum dimensions of 45 x 35 x 20 cm. This item must fit under the seat in front of you. In addition to the personal item, passengers (except those with Basic and XS fares) may bring one carry-on bag measuring up to 55 x 35 x 25 cm, including wheels and handles, and weighing no more than 10 kg. The carry-on bag should be stowed in the overhead compartment. If your carry-on exceeds these dimensions or weight, it will need to be checked in, and additional fees may apply.
Checked Baggage
The allowance for checked baggage depends on your fare type:
-
XS and S Fares: No checked baggage included.
-
M and L Fares: One checked bag up to 23 kg.
-
XXL Fare: Two checked bags, each up to 32 kg.
Each checked bag must not exceed 158 cm in total dimensions (length + width + height). If your baggage exceeds these limits, additional charges for overweight or oversized baggage will apply.
Special Luggage
Items such as sports equipment, musical instruments, and artwork are considered special luggage. These can be transported as checked baggage, provided they are properly packed, can withstand handling, and comply with the allowed measurements and weight. If your special luggage exceeds the standard dimensions or weight, additional fees may apply. It's recommended to contact Avianca in advance to confirm the requirements and any potential charges for transporting special items.

Avianca lets you pick your seat for a better travel experience. The cost of seats changes based on the route and type. For flights from North America and Central America, Economy seats start at USD 15. Premium seats start at USD 85.

Avianca's LifeMiles program makes choosing seats even better. Members can upgrade or pick seats with points. For domestic US flights, economy costs 6,000 to 15,000 points. First class costs 16,000 to 25,000 points.
But remember, LifeMiles expire after 12 months without use. Transferring points can extend this time.
Loyalty Program
Avianca's LifeMiles program is a top choice for airline rewards. It lets members earn miles in many ways. You can get miles by flying with Avianca, using credit cards, or participating in partner activities.
LifeMiles has four elite tiers: Red Plus, Silver, Gold, and Diamond. Each tier offers better perks. For example, Gold members get a 60% bonus on miles and 20 lounge entries. Diamond status gives unlimited lounge access and an 80% bonus on miles.
The program is flexible with its redemption options. You can use miles for flights, upgrades, or other rewards in the Star Alliance network. This means you can travel anywhere, from short trips to long international flights.
Elite Status | Qualifying Miles | Avianca Miles Required | Key Benefits |
---|---|---|---|
Red Plus | 6,000 | 1,000 | 1 lounge entry, 10% bonus miles |
Silver | 12,000 | 3,000 | 2 lounge entries, 20% bonus miles |
Gold | 24,000 | 12,000 | 20 lounge entries, 60% bonus miles |
Diamond | 45,000 | 22,500 | Unlimited lounge access, 80% bonus miles |
LifeMiles often offers great value. For instance, a business-class ticket from Washington to Zurich costs just 69,000 LifeMiles. This is cheaper than 88,000 United miles. It shows how you can save on premium travel with LifeMiles.
Food & Beverage
Avianca's in-flight food and beverage offerings vary based on flight route, duration, and travel class. On flights to and from Europe, all passengers receive complimentary meals, which may include breakfast, lunch, or dinner, depending on the time of day. In Business Class, passengers are treated to a menu designed to awaken the senses, featuring a welcome drink, appetizer, a variety of meal options, and unlimited alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. In Economy Class on these routes, passengers enjoy complimentary meals and a selection of beverages.
For flights within the Americas, Avianca has implemented a buy-on-board program for Economy Class passengers. The onboard sales menu offers a variety of fresh and packaged food items, such as ham and cheese croissants, chicken sandwiches, vegetarian options, and snacks like potato chips and mixed nuts. Beverage selections include coffee, tea, soft drinks, juices, and alcoholic beverages. Payments can be made using Visa or MasterCard debit and credit cards, as well as onboard coupons available for purchase at select airport counters and boarding gates.
In-Flight Entertainment
Avianca Airlines has a variety of entertainment for passengers. The options change based on the plane and route. On A320 single-aisle flights, "Avianca on Air" in-flight Wi-Fi is available.
Long-haul flights have personal screens for each seat. These screens offer movies, TV shows, music, and games. For flights without screens, passengers can stream content on their devices.
In-flight Wi-Fi starts at 10,000 feet. You can connect up to three devices. There are different plans:
- Network and Mail Plan (2-hour access)
- Navigation Plan (unlimited web browsing)
- All-Inclusive Plan (video streaming, music, and software updates)
Economy and Business Class have different movie selections. Business Class offers more choices and premium content.
Wi-Fi quality might not be the same as on the ground. Turn off data roaming to avoid extra charges. Avianca aims to make flights comfortable with lots of entertainment.

Lounge Usage
Avianca VIP lounges are a haven for travelers looking for comfort before their flights. The main lounge at Bogota Airport is near Gate 32 in Terminal 1. It's open from 4:00 AM to 12:30 AM every day. It's for business class passengers, Star Alliance Gold members, and top Lifemiles program members.
The lounge has strong Wi-Fi and many amenities. Guests can enjoy a buffet with hot and cold drinks. But, some say the coffee could be better. There are charging areas, work stations, lockers, and a resting area. Showers are usually available, but they were closed during a recent check.
If you don't have business class access, the El Dorado Lounge near Gate 47 is open 24/7 for Priority Pass members. Avianca lounges can get busy, but some find it better in the evenings. The Bogota lounge scored 63% satisfaction, with great Wi-Fi and food, but needs better service and design.
