Garuda Indonesia Flights

About

Garuda Indonesia is the national flag carrier of Indonesia. Founded in 1947 as KLM Interinsulair Bedrijf, it was rebranded as Garuda Indonesia in 1949. The airline is headquartered at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta and is a member of the SkyTeam airline alliance. It operates scheduled flights to various destinations across Asia, Europe, and Australia. Additionally, it has a low-cost subsidiary, Citilink, which caters to budget-conscious travelers.

Garuda Indonesia offers four different travel classes: Economy, Premium Economy, Business, and First Class. Economy Class provides comfortable seating with ample legroom and a variety of meal options, while Premium Economy offers larger seats, additional baggage allowance, and priority check-in. Business Class features fully reclining seats, gourmet dining, and access to exclusive airport lounges. First Class provides a luxurious experience with private cabin designs, a personal flight attendant, fine dining, and the highest level of premium service available.

Check-in

Garuda Indonesia offers multiple check-in options to enhance passenger convenience. For those preferring online methods, Web Check-in is available from 48 hours up to 2 hours before departure for domestic flights, and up to 4 hours prior for international flights. Similarly, Mobile Check-in via the Garuda Indonesia mobile app follows the same time frames. These services are not applicable for passengers without e-tickets, infants under two not occupying a seat, those requiring special assistance, or group bookings exceeding nine individuals. It's important to note that for international flights, passengers must present their online boarding passes at the airport check-in counter for document verification.

For travelers who prefer in-person check-in, airport counters open 120 minutes before departure for domestic flights and 180 minutes prior for international flights. Passengers are advised to complete check-in at least 45 minutes before departure for domestic routes and 60 minutes for international ones. Additionally, Kiosk Check-in services are available at select airports, including Soekarno-Hatta Airport in Jakarta and I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali, among others. This option allows check-in from 8 hours up to 1 hour before departure for domestic flights departing from Jakarta. For further assistance or information, passengers can contact the Garuda Indonesia Call Center.

Baggage Allowance

Hand Luggage

Passengers are permitted one piece of hand luggage with a maximum weight of 7 kg. The dimensions should not exceed 56 cm in length, 36 cm in width, and 23 cm in depth, totaling 115 cm. For Economy Class passengers on CRJ and ATR aircraft, the maximum dimensions are 41 cm x 34 cm x 17 cm, totaling 92 cm, with the same weight limit of 7 kg. In addition to the main hand luggage, passengers may carry personal items such as a laptop bag or a small handbag. It's important to note that all hand luggage must fit in the overhead compartment or under the seat in front of you.

Checked Baggage

The checked baggage allowance varies based on the class of service and destination. For domestic flights, the allowances are as follows:

  • First Class: 40 kg
  • Business Class: 30 kg
  • Economy Class: 20 kg

For international flights, the allowances are:

  • First Class: 50 kg
  • Business Class: 40 kg
  • Economy Class: 30 kg

Infants without a seat are allowed 10 kg of checked baggage on both domestic and international flights, except in First Class on domestic routes, where the allowance is 20 kg. Each piece of checked baggage must not exceed 32 kg to comply with safety regulations.

Special Luggage

Garuda Indonesia accommodates special luggage, including sports equipment and musical instruments. Each passenger is allowed one piece of sports equipment free of charge, which is counted towards the standard baggage allowance. If the combined weight of baggage and sports equipment exceeds the free allowance, excess baggage fees will apply. For musical instruments, if they exceed the cabin baggage size or weight limits, they must be checked in. Passengers are advised to pack such items securely and may consider purchasing an extra seat if they wish to keep the instrument in the cabin, subject to space availability and prior arrangement.

Seat Selection

Garuda Indonesia now lets passengers pick their seats for a fee. This started on October 26, 2024. It's a way to make your flight better by choosing where you sit.

Choosing your seat is easy. You can do it after you buy your ticket. Regular seats cost Rp 85,000. Seats with more legroom start at Rp 199,000. If you're on a tight budget, you can pick your seat for free 48 hours before flying. Some travelers get this for free, like those with GarudaMiles Platinum or SkyTeam Elite Plus.

Seat Type Cost Eligibility
Regular Seat Rp 85,000 All passengers
Extra Legroom Seat From Rp 199,000 All passengers
Free Selection No charge GarudaMiles Platinum, SkyTeam Elite Plus, Eco Comfort tickets
Check-in Selection No charge All passengers, 48 hours before departure

This change is common in the airline world. Both budget and full-service airlines charge for seat selection. But, remember, seats near emergency exits have rules. They're not for kids, pregnant women, the elderly, or people with disabilities.

Loyalty Program

Garuda Indonesia's frequent flyer program, GarudaMiles, is designed to reward loyal customers with a range of exclusive benefits and privileges. Members earn miles when flying with Garuda Indonesia and its partner airlines, which can be redeemed for award tickets to various destinations or for class upgrades from Economy to Business Class. These awards are transferable, allowing members to share benefits with family, friends, or colleagues. Additional perks for GarudaMiles members include access to special check-in counters, extra baggage allowance, priority baggage handling, priority waitlisting on reservations, and access to Garuda Indonesia airport lounges. The program offers multiple membership tiers: Blue, Silver, Gold, and Platinum, each providing varying levels of benefits.

In 2024, Garuda Indonesia expanded its partnership with Plusgrade, introducing new features to enhance the GarudaMiles program. One notable addition is the "Buy Miles" feature, enabling members to purchase miles directly, accelerating their journey toward desired rewards such as premium flights and exclusive benefits. This initiative reflects Garuda Indonesia's commitment to providing greater flexibility and value to its loyal customers, ensuring a more rewarding travel experience.

Food & Beverage

Garuda Indonesia offers a diverse in-flight dining experience that showcases both Indonesian and international cuisines. Passengers can enjoy complimentary meals and beverages across all classes, with menus featuring traditional Indonesian dishes such as nasi goreng (fried rice), sate (skewered meat), and rendang (spicy beef stew), as well as Western options like pasta and grilled chicken. All meals served onboard are Halal certified. On long-haul international flights, passengers are typically provided with two hot meals: a main course and a lighter snack before landing. For shorter domestic flights, the service includes a complimentary drink and usually a small baguette or snack. It's important to note that while alcoholic beverages, including wine and beer, are available on international routes, Garuda Indonesia maintains a dry policy on domestic flights, refraining from serving alcohol.

In Business and First Class, the airline elevates the dining experience with a selection of premium meal options and personalized service. Business Class passengers on international flights can choose from three hot meal selections, featuring both European and Asian-inspired dishes. On routes to Japan, the menu includes authentic Japanese-themed dishes to enhance the cultural experience. First Class passengers are treated to an exclusive menu that includes global favorites, regional Indonesian specialties, Japanese Kaiseki, and modern European plates. Additionally, Garuda Indonesia offers unique signature beverages such as Kedondong Juice, made from the ambarella fruit, providing a refreshing taste of Indonesian flavors.

In-Flight Entertainment

Garuda Indonesia offers a comprehensive in-flight entertainment system designed to enhance the passenger experience across all classes. Passengers can enjoy a variety of entertainment options through individual touch-screen LCD TVs equipped with Audio and Video on Demand (AVOD) systems. The content library includes a wide selection of movies, TV programs across various genres, music albums spanning from pop and jazz to classical and traditional Indonesian music, as well as interactive games suitable for all ages. Additionally, passengers have access to the airline's in-flight magazine, "Colours," which provides insightful articles and features to enrich the journey.

To keep passengers connected, Garuda Indonesia provides in-flight Wi-Fi services on select aircraft, specifically the Boeing 777-300ER and Airbus A330-900neo. Passengers can choose from various internet packages to stay in touch with family, friends, or business associates during their flight. For those traveling on aircraft equipped with wireless in-flight entertainment systems, such as certain Airbus models, passengers can stream content directly to their personal devices by connecting to the "Garuda Entertainment" network. This service allows for a personalized entertainment experience, enabling passengers to watch movies, TV series, or listen to music on their own smartphones or tablets throughout the flight.

Pet Policy

Garuda Indonesia allows pets on domestic flights under 2 hours. Pets travel in the cargo hold, not with passengers. The airline accepts pets up to 70 lbs (32 kg), including their crate.

Passengers must check in at least one hour before flying. This ensures a smooth start for both pets and people.

The airline has strict rules for pet carriers. Crates must meet IATA standards, allowing pets to move freely. Garuda Indonesia focuses on pet safety during flights.

They don't transport pets in extreme temperatures. Health certificates and rabies vaccinations are also required. This ensures pets are healthy for travel.

  • Service dogs fly free in the cabin with 48-hour notice
  • Snub-nosed animals need larger crates
  • Pets not allowed on international flights
  • Direct flights only for pet travel
  • No endangered species transport

Lounge Usage

Garuda Indonesia is a Skytrax 5-star airline known for its premium travel experiences. Its main lounge is in Terminal 3 at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK). Opened in 2016, it serves SkyTeam first and business class passengers, plus SkyTeam Elite Plus members.

The lounge has many amenities for travelers. There's a buffet with salads, fruits, mini-cakes, sandwiches, and hot dishes like fried rice and chicken sausage. You can also find soda, bottled water, and coffee. It has comfy seating, Wi-Fi, and business facilities. Plus, there are shower facilities for those who need to freshen up.

Being part of the SkyTeam alliance, Garuda Indonesia's elite passengers get access to over 750 lounges worldwide.
