About
Georgian Airways is the flag carrier of Georgia, established in 1994 under the name Airzena before rebranding to its current name in 2004. Despite having a relatively small fleet of just eight aircraft, the airline operates flights to 22 destinations, focusing on profitable routes such as Amsterdam and Tel Aviv. Its fleet includes Boeing 737s, a Bombardier CRJ200LR, and a Boeing 767-300, allowing it to serve both short-haul and long-haul routes efficiently. Georgian Airways has played a significant role in connecting Georgia with key cities in Europe and Asia, offering flexible fare options like LIGHT, STANDARD, FLEXIBLE, and BUSINESS to cater to various passenger needs.
The airline has faced major challenges over the years, including the Russian flight ban in 2019 and the global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, which significantly disrupted its operations. After a long suspension of flights, Georgian Airways resumed operations in February 2021. However, financial difficulties persisted, leading the airline to file for bankruptcy in December 2021 with debts amounting to ₾125 million. Despite these setbacks, Georgian Airways is working towards financial recovery, aiming to improve its services and regain passenger trust. Its continued operations underscore its vital role in Georgia's aviation sector, maintaining important air links across Europe and Asia.
Check-in
Georgian Airways offers passengers both online and airport check-in options. Online check-in opens 24 hours before the flight and can be completed up to 1 hour before departure. Passengers can log in using their booking code and last name on the official website or mobile app to select their seats and obtain their boarding passes digitally. This service is highly convenient for saving time at the airport and streamlining the process.
Airport check-in typically begins 2-3 hours before the flight and continues until 40-60 minutes before departure. Passengers can drop off their tickets and luggage at the check-in counter. Georgian Airways recommends adhering to baggage rules and ensuring that passengers have all necessary travel documents ready. Arriving at the airport early, especially during peak travel periods, can help ensure a smooth check-in process.
Baggage Allowance
Hand Luggage
-
Economy Class: Passengers are allowed one piece of hand luggage weighing up to 8 kg, with maximum dimensions totaling 115 cm (length + width + height).
-
Business Class: Passengers may carry two pieces of hand luggage, each weighing up to 12 kg, adhering to the same size restrictions.
In addition to the standard hand luggage allowance, passengers are permitted to carry personal items such as an umbrella, a handbag, a bouquet, reading material, electronic devices like a laptop or camera, a mobile phone, a crutch, duty-free purchases, and infant food. It's important to note that liquids carried on board must not exceed 100 ml per container and should be placed in a transparent, hermetically sealed plastic bag.
Checked Baggage
The checked baggage allowance is determined by the fare type:
-
LIGHT Fare: No free checked baggage allowance; passengers may carry one piece of hand luggage up to 8 kg.
-
STANDARD and FLEXI Fares: One piece of checked baggage up to 23 kg, with total dimensions not exceeding 158 cm.
-
Business Class: Two pieces of checked baggage, each up to 32 kg, with total dimensions not exceeding 203 cm.
For children aged 2 to 12 years, the free baggage allowance is the same as for adult passengers. Infants under 2 years are allowed 5 kg of hand luggage and 10 kg of checked baggage, along with a stroller or child car seat.
Special Luggage
Georgian Airways also has specific policies for special luggage items such as sports equipment, musical instruments, and pets. Sports equipment like golf bags, skis, and bicycles can be checked in as part of the standard baggage allowance, provided they are properly packed and do not exceed the weight limits. Musical instruments that exceed hand luggage dimensions can be transported in the cabin if a separate seat is purchased for them.
Seat Selection
Georgian Airways offers passengers the option to select their preferred seats during the booking process on their official website. The cost for seat selection in Economy Class varies: standard seats are priced at €9, seats in the first two rows at €45, and emergency exit row seats at €55. For Business Class passengers, seat selection is complimentary. If passengers choose not to select a seat in advance, they can do so free of charge during online check-in, which opens 24 hours prior to departure.
It's important to note that passengers who have selected seats in the emergency exit row must meet specific requirements, such as being able to understand instructions in Georgian, English, or Russian, and being willing to assist in case of an emergency. Additionally, online check-in is not available for these seats; passengers must check in at the airport. If a passenger does not meet the necessary criteria for an emergency exit seat, they may be reassigned at the airport without a refund for the seat selection fee.
Loyalty Program
Georgian Airways currently does not offer a frequent flyer program. However, the airline has established interline agreements with 13 major airlines, including Air France, KLM, and Delta, to enhance travel convenience for passengers.
Food & Beverage
Georgian Airways offers a variety of food and beverage options to its passengers during flights. Business Class passengers are welcomed with freshly squeezed juices and can enjoy meals that blend international and traditional Georgian flavors. The in-flight offerings also include alcoholic beverages such as Georgian brandy, fine wines, and beers. Additionally, Business Class passengers can choose from a selection of movies, music, and videos to make their flight more entertaining.
Economy Class passengers are served breakfast or dinner prepared by top chefs, depending on the flight duration. A curated selection of Georgian wines is also offered to enhance the dining experience. These services are designed to make the flight more enjoyable and provide passengers with a taste of Georgian hospitality.
In-Flight Entertainment
Georgian Airways provides in-flight entertainment options to enhance the passenger experience during flights. Passengers can enjoy a selection of movies, TV shows, and music to keep themselves entertained throughout their journey. These amenities are designed to make the flight more enjoyable and comfortable for travelers.
It's important to note that the availability and type of in-flight entertainment may vary depending on the aircraft and the specific route. Passengers are encouraged to check with Georgian Airways for the most up-to-date information regarding in-flight entertainment options on their particular flight.
Pet Policy
Georgian Airways allows the transportation of dogs and cats both in the passenger cabin and in the aircraft hold, subject to specific conditions. Pets must be at least 4 months old, healthy, and kept in a leak-proof kennel throughout the flight. Pregnant animals are not accepted. In the Economy Class cabin, pets are permitted if the combined weight of the animal and the container does not exceed 8 kg, with maximum dimensions of 55 x 40 x 23 cm. It's important to note that traveling with pets is allowed only in the Economy Class cabin; with Business and Premium-Economy class tickets, pets must be checked in the cargo hold area. Passengers are required to inform the airline at the time of booking if they plan to travel with a pet and ensure all necessary documents are prepared, adhering to country-specific regulations concerning the import and export of pets.
For pets traveling in the aircraft hold, animals exceeding 8 kg can be accepted. The animal must be transported in a kennel that meets the specifications of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), including being clean, leak-proof, escape-proof, ventilated on three sides, and spacious enough for the animal to stand, move, and lie down naturally. The kennel must also have absorbent material on the floor, and copies of valid health documents in English must be attached to the kennel in an envelope. Transportation of animals is not included in the free baggage allowance; normal excess baggage charges apply based on the combined weight of the animal and the container. Service animals, such as guide dogs accompanying passengers with reduced mobility, are accepted free of charge but must be pre-notified and accompanied by a certificate proving their status.
Lounge Usage
Georgian Airways offers Primeclass Lounge services at Tbilisi International Airport to provide passengers with a comfortable waiting experience. This lounge is accessible to Business Class passengers and members of certain loyalty programs, offering amenities such as a variety of refreshments, comfortable seating areas, and free Wi-Fi. Additionally, passengers with specific credit cards and those enrolled in lounge membership programs can also benefit from this service.
Business Class passengers can relax and work before their flights or during layovers with lounge access included in their tickets. Economy Class passengers, on the other hand, can purchase lounge access for an additional fee, depending on availability. Since lounge access and policies may vary based on the airport and the passenger’s ticket class, it is recommended to check the latest information on Georgian Airways' official website or through customer service before traveling.
